Folegandros island
The group of islands referred to as Cyclades are home to many of the most famous islands throughout Greece. Paros, Santorini, Syros and Mykonos all are part of this unique island formation, plus they attract large numbers of visitors every year from all over the planet.

Among the less popular islands in the Cyclades is that of Folegandros, which is a little but very stunning and remarkable island. It is the ideal location to visit if you wish to steer clear of the crowds of a few of the other more well-known islands.

The capital town Folegandros is actually a formation of two settlements. In Greek, the word "Kastro" means "castle or fortress", and this is exactly what you'll see when you visit the old area of the capital town of Chora.

This wonderful Venetian castle was originally constructed as a defensive system for the island to safeguard it from pirate attacks. The castle was built on the edge of a very steep cliff, about 200 meters above sea level. The landscapes from this level are perfect and well worth experiencing.

The whole old part of the town is a great spot to stroll around and will give you a fascinating understanding of the historic past of the island. There are more places of interest which are really worth seeing if you have the chance.

Folegandros is a superb Greek island location and is really a great destination for your relaxing and satisfying trips in Greece. With frequent ferry services to Athens along with other islands in the Cyclades, it is an island that every visitor to Greece should try to see and enjoy.
